Chilean police have successfully apprehended Nelson Haase, a man convicted of the kidnapping and murder of renowned folk singer Victor Jara. The crime occurred in the chaotic days following the military coup that installed Augusto Pinochet as Chile's leader in 1973.
Haase was one of several military officers who were sentenced to prison for their roles in Jara's brutal killing. In August 2023, he was sentenced to a 25-year term, but he evaded imprisonment until his capture this past Saturday. Authorities located him in the southern region of Puyehue, approximately 950 kilometers from Santiago, the nation's capital.
Remembering Victor Jara's Legacy
Victor Jara gained fame in the 1960s and 70s for his protest music, which supported Salvador Allende, the socialist president ousted by Pinochet's coup. Following the coup, Jara was arrested and subsequently tortured before being shot 44 times. His murder stands out as a significant example of the brutality faced by perceived opponents of the regime.
Jara was among approximately 5,000 individuals detained and held in a sports stadium in Santiago immediately after the coup. Witnesses recount how soldiers tortured him, crushing his fingers and mocking his ability to play the guitar ever again.
Justice and Ongoing Consequences
The conviction of Haase, a retired colonel, alongside seven other officers, came in 2018. After years of legal appeals, Chile's Supreme Court finalized the sentences, handing Haase 15 years for murder and an additional 10 years for kidnapping.
Despite being 80 years old at the time of sentencing, Haase evaded justice for nearly three years. His capture represents a significant step in addressing the unresolved cases of human rights abuses from Pinochet's 17-year rule, during which thousands were tortured, killed, or disappeared.
In a related development, another convicted officer, General Hernan Chacon, died by suicide when authorities attempted to arrest him. Meanwhile, the remaining five convicted officers are serving their sentences.
International Involvement
In addition to Chilean efforts, international cooperation has been crucial in pursuing justice for Jara's murder. In 2023, the United States extradited retired army lieutenant Pedro Barrientos to Chile. Barrientos had been found liable for Jara's murder by a Florida jury, reflecting the global reach of the case and its continued impact on human rights discourse.
